Whistles

I found my husband's secret stash of whistles tonight.

Gabriel has attempted collecting various objects, half-heartedly, for many years but whistle collecting predates my grand entrance. I've only been around for clocks, LED bulbs, camping equipment, CD's, porn and fish. Fortunately, his mother hauls lots of crap around with her every time she moves and has long since discovered the wonderful world of storage, which means she has been transporting coins, stamps, rubber stamps, crystal balls, cigar rings and, apparently, whistles for roughly the last twenty years.

The "storage unit" as we so creatively call it, is the size of a very large studio apartment and even has its own bathroom, which consists of a toilet in a closet sized room with a little sink crowned with a scrap of mirror illuminated by a naked bulb in the ceiling. Bathrooms coming standard in storage units is a new one on me, I suppose it's there in case you get lost amongst the towering piles of crap, ensuring that you don't shit next to the Lloyd sculpture and wipe with the Kennebunk Weavers virgin wool throw. But I digress.

Way back in the furthest reaches of the unit, with the spiders and ceramic fruit, a few cheap fold up card tables covered with old white sheets bend under the weight of various knick-knacks, carved boxes, baskets & trays, piled with small handprints immortalized in Plaster of Paris, baby shoes and tiny teacups. Inside of one of these wooden boxes I found a collection of whistles. Little metal whistles, brass whistles, whistles shaped like birds, bears and something that looks like a little retarded badger. They all worked and I have chosen my favorite; it happens to be strung on a silver chain and is engraved with his initials, when you look at it, it sort of says "vintage tiffany".

Awwwwwwwwww..............
